An Australian bikini model has been criticised for staging a social media photo with perfect hair and makeup to announce the moment she went into labour.

Hannah Polites, 28, was preparing to leave her house on the Gold Coast, Queensland, with husband Grant Small and daughter Evaliah Grace when she appeared to pause and take the perfectly staged snap.

Wearing matching grey ensembles, Hannah welcomed her son into the world mere hours after the image was uploaded to her Instagram page.

A word board placed in front of the family read: 'Woohoo mama is in labour and baby is nearly here'.

Some of Hannah's 1.3 million followers accused the staged photo shoot of being 'bizarre' and outlandish, particularly given she delivered her second child that day.

'She's like "ready to push" posing with full makeup and in a designer hospital gown,' one person commented.

'Is taking the time to set up a staged photos for Instagram when you're in labour problematic?'
