Canadian soccer player Adriana Leon is feeling very zen while spending time in Queensland, Australia. Leon, 30, posted pictures of herself wearing a bikini, enjoying a dip in a beautiful pool surrounded by lush greenery. "Meditative state of mind. Spa day to close out the pre-camp ??♀️," she captioned the post.
Leon fuels her training with protein-packed meals. "I try to keep my meals fresh so I often mix it up," she says. "For breakfast, one of my favorite meals is an egg white omelet with spinach, mushrooms and onions. Omelets are easy to make, especially when you're pressed for time. I'm constantly changing up my meals, but my two go-to options are a gluten free wrap and a brown rice bowl. After a workout it's important that I'm refueling and giving my body what it needs. I usually have powdered protein as well as brown rice, chicken and greens."
Leon works hard on building leg muscles. "There are definitely a lot of leg exercises built into our training program, but squats are an excellent way to tone your legs," she says. "There are definitely a lot of leg exercises built into our training program, but squats are an excellent way to tone your legs. When I have downtime you can usually find me doing hot yoga. It's one of the things that helps relax me, and just puts me in a different mindset."
Leon enjoys the mental benefits of meditation and yoga. "On top of soccer, I also enjoy yoga and meditation. I've found it helps with clearing my mind, envisioning my end goal and overcoming hurdles with a positive attitude… I've learned that our bodies can handle so much more than what our minds think," she says. "Mental endurance is just as important as your physical endurance and so I really take the time to incorporate yoga and meditation into my training program."
Leon focuses on the bigger picture when it comes to her training and her career. "One of the best training advices I've been given is to appreciate the process," she says. "Things don't change overnight, so it's important to look at the bigger picture. Part of being an athlete is having a competitive spirit and for me personally, I want to see the results and reach my goals immediately. I start with setting my goal for a better perspective on what I want to accomplish. Then I remind myself to look at the full journey, the whole process 'the ups and the downs' and to enjoy it, knowing that I'll be better for it."
Leon admits working out is not always easy, but always worth it. "Work hard, and then work harder," she says. "I think it's really important to have the courage to never give up and push through a workout. It's not always easy, but once you've crushed your workout, the feeling is irreplaceable and you really are better for it. It's important to remember that everyone has days like this. You're not alone. I always try to look at the bigger picture for a better perspective of what I'm trying to accomplish and why it is that I do this every day. Setting goals really helps me. It reminds me why I need to get up, start my day and complete my workout."
