Why is a swimsuit called a bathing suit? Prior to that women just swam and bathed naked

It seems in Bath England they started requiring people to wear suits at the spa and for sea bathing somewhere back in the mid 1800's.

Prior to that people just swam and bathed naked. Also in modern times people sun “bathe” in them.  Another key point is that in the early days, women didn’t really learn how to swim. (Ok some did, it was added as an Olympic sport around 1920).

But still, most women didn’t swim. They just “bathed” in the water for fun.
