Carmen Serano is sharing a message of self-love in her swimsuit. In a new social media post, the actress, who played Assistant Principal Carmen Molina on the hit show Breaking Bad, shows off her incredible body at 50 in a bathing suit, while walking in the ocean. "Beautiful," commented one of her followers. "Gorgeous," added another.
In her post celebrating her 50th, Carmen confessed that she has major self-love. " I've learned to let go of the old stories that enslaved me. This newfound freedom is unlike anything I've ever experienced before! The freedom to not only accept but to fully embrace myself and my body, regardless of weight, stretch marks, cellulite & whatever imperfections I used to focus on," she wrote. I'm done with that old, boring narrative of not being thin enough, successful enough, rich enough! I am EVERYTHING enough! And I deserve all the happiness this life has to offer. ? So…That's my new story, and I'm sticking to it!" she continued. "It's never too late to learn something new, and loving yourself is the best new thing you can learn! And for you young, beautiful little things out there, please don't wait! The time is now!"
Carmen spends a lot of time outside. She loves kayaking in the ocean. "Happy place," she captioned a set of photos of herself kayaking. Kayaking is a great workout. Not only is it great for building upper body strength and helps reduce stress, but can burn up to 400 calories per hour, translating to 1,600 calories in four hours of paddling.
Carmen is also an avid hiker. "One with nature," she captioned a post. According to the National Parks Service, the physical benefits of hiking include:
Building stronger muscles and bones
Improving your sense of balance
Improving your heart health
Decreasing the risk of certain respiratory problems
Carmen is a coffee drinker. "Starbucks in #Paris," she captioned a snap of herself sipping on a cup in France. According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are several benefits of drinking coffee in moderation. "It acts on your brain to improve memory, mood, reaction times, and mental function," they say, citing a study finding that caffeine can improve endurance and performance during exercise. It is also antioxidant-rich, can ward off diabetes, prevent neurologic disease, lower cancer risk, and ward off depression, they point out.
Carmen enjoys the benefits of standup paddleboarding. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) agrees that paddle boarding is great for the core and also a great form of cardio. The water sport can burn an average of 385 calories for a 140 pound male and 436 for a female the same size, per a study conducted by Arizona State University.
Finally, Carmen takes lots of walks. Going for a daily walk can be a game changer in terms of exercise, especially at a brisk speed. One study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that walking at a brisk pace for about 30 minutes a day led to a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia and death, compared with walking a similar number of steps but at a slower pace.
