Marcie Reid is star jumping her way to fitness this month as she raises vital funds for Brain Tumour Research

Marcie Reid was among the first to sign up to the charity’s 100 Star Jumps a Day in November challenge when it launched in October, inspired by the ‘life-changing’ experience of a former Watford-based T.F. Tull Ltd colleague she was ‘very close’ to.

The 26-year-old said engineer Steve Wright, a 47-year-old father-of-two, ‘opened her eyes’ to something she had previously been ‘very ignorant’ of when he was diagnosed with a low-grade brain tumour after a routine check-up.

Marcie continued: “I can’t even fathom getting that news when you think you’re going in for a check-up. Thankfully he was able to have it surgically removed and is now absolutely fine, with a lovely scar right down his head, but it is nice to know someone who has bounced back from such an unfortunate experience – it instils a bit of hope in you, I think.”

The ‘fitness-obsessed’ FMC Bikini Athlete of the Year 2018 was ranked in the top 12 of last year’s Miss Galaxy UK pageant and is hoping to take the crown at Miss Intercontinental UK on Saturday, November 20, with the star jumps challenge a great way to help her keep in shape and develop her volunteering and charity work platform.

She said: “I’m using it for my cardio because I like weight-lifting but cardio isn’t my favourite thing, in fact, it’s far from it and it might seem silly but I enjoy star jumps. Other people like to do sit-ups or burpees but I think star jumps are great and doing it for the charity will keep me motivated and ensure I do it every day.”

Charlie Allsebrook, community development manager for Brain Tumour Research, said: “I’m thrilled to see this challenge get underway as there’s been so much excitement building among those who have signed up to take part.

"I would encourage anyone wanting to get involved to join our Facebook group and prepare to have fun, get fit and raise funds for vital research into brain tumours.”

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer yet historically just 1 per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.

Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research at dedicated centres in the UK. It also campaigns for the Government and the larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours in order to speed up new treatments for patients and, ultimately, to find a cure.

The charity is calling for a national annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia and is also campaigning for greater repurposing of drugs.
